6 Perfect Days in Grenada

What does the perfect week look like in the hidden gem of the Caribbean? At Calabash, we prescribe a healthy balance of low-key relaxation, cultural explorations & gastronomic quests.

Day 1: Monday

Rest & Rejuvenate

Unwind from the previous day’s travels to ease into the island’s rhythms. Take an early morning dip in the Caribbean sea, followed by a stroll along the beach to get acquainted with your surroundings. Nourish yourself with a beachside breakfast, sampling sun-ripened fruits and housemade yoghurt. Peel off to the beach loungers for the remainder of the morning, with ice cold freshly-made fruit juice to tide you over until lunch at The Beach Club. Tuck into a series of shared plates, sampling this island’s aquatic offerings from King Crab Brioche to Tuna Poke Nachos. Late afternoon, indulge your jet-lagged muscles at The Spa with a Total Harmony Signature Massage, designed to acclimatise the body’s circadian rhythm. Afterwards, get a flavour of the island at the Rum Tasting with Simon, leading you nicely into an early poolside dinner at Nori, Calabash’s latest restaurant. It features Latin-Japanese inspired sharing dishes, highlights of which include the popular Kiss of Fire and Charred Tiradito.

Day 2: Tuesday

Easing in to island life

Start the day stretching with Yoga at the pavilion before breakfast on the beach, this time sampling a classic Caribbean dish. Late morning, kayak or Hobie cat around Prickly Bay. After lunch at the Beach Club, challenge your partner to a light game of Tennis with the promise of a celebratory drink on Grand Anse Beach post-match. Bar hop between Coconuts and 61 West, deciphering the best Pina Colada. Stroll the length of the 2-mile beach late afternoon for the livelier part of the day, when post-work sea dip rituals and small gatherings come to life. Stay until sunset, perhaps lucky enough to witness the green flash. Back at Calabash, you’re invited to the Garbutt family’s cocktail drinks, an opportunity to meet fellow guests and the family, before Grill Night at The Beach Club accompanied by the sweet sound of steel pan.

Day 3: Wednesday

The adventure begins

Spend the day exploring Grenada with an island tour. First stop, Annandale Falls for a quick dip in its freshwater pool and light refreshment before embarking to the East Coast Parish of St. Andrew, the island’s agricultural heart, paying a visit to Belmont Estate, immersing headfirst into a cultural initiation of the island’s history and heritage. Stop in at River Antoine Rum Distillery, the rum of which is produced via a 250 year-old water mill. Next up, lunch at Armadillo, a fine-dining experience tucked at the tip of the island. Run by a Swiss-Grenadian couple, their menu is based on the produce of nearby planters and fishermen. Find your way back via the West Coast along the fishing communities of Gouyave and Victoria. A pit stop at Crayfish Bay is a must to sample truly tree-to-bar chocolate made by Kim & Lylette, who have been producing chocolate since 2016 after years of rehabilitating an abandoned cocoa estate. Unwind back at Calabash for a late-afternoon dip and Chocolate Tasting with Chef Ramces, before settling into evening drinks and dinner at Rhodes Restaurant.

Day 4: Thursday

Find your sea legs

Spend the morning relaxing poolside before heading into the island’s capital town of St. George in time for lunch at Sails, overlooking the picturesque colourful Carenage. Drop in at House of Chocolate nearby before ascending to the panoramic views of historic Fort George. Relax back at Calabash before a sunset sail on a hand-built traditional boat, Savvy’s, soaking in the island’s silhouette from sea. Make it back in time to sway into the rhythm of Caribbean Night at The Beach Club.

Day 5: Friday

Live the country life

The morning’s adventure takes you to L’Esterre Estate, a family-run cocoa and nutmeg estate near Grenville. Run by the Ramdhanny family for over 4-generations, it is the maternal home of the Garbutt family. Make your way up with guide Simon Green, the family’s trusted tour guide, stopping off at Grand Etang Forest Reserve, the heart of the rainforest, to feed the mona monkeys their morning banana and catch a glimpse of Grand Etang lake. Embark on a walking tour of the cocoa and spice fields at L’Esterre, stopping off at ‘The Works’ to see cocoa at the different stages of processing. Refresh back at the breezy balcony of L’Esterre house with the eldest sibling, Lauren, sampling homemade juices from the garden and light bites reminiscent of the family’s East Indian heritage. Head back down south to Calabash in time for Afternoon Tea to unwind from the day’s adventures.

Day 6: Saturday

A gastronomic melting pot

Spend Saturday morning at Market Square in St. George, sampling the wealth and breadth of Grenada’s spices and artisanal products, the perfect souvenir-hunting opportunity. Later on, capture the charm of Grenadian culture and cuisine with the Eat like a Grenadian experience at the home of the Roberts family. It begins with a guided tour of their homestead, learning the nutritional benefits of Grenada’s herbs and spices, before enjoying a ‘garden to table’ meal, with the opportunity to assist in the preparation of local dishes.

Spend the remainder of your final full day back at Calabash, dedicating it to the last of the rays. Return home fully rested and renewed, enchanted by island life.
